The donation ceremony, organized by both MIM and the Information Communication Technologies Authority, took place on the 28th of August 2023 at the premises of MIM, 2 Vélore Street, Port Louis.
Among the personalities present were the Hon. Dr. Anwar Husnoo, Vice PM; Hon. Abbas Mamode, MLA; Mr. Dick Ng Sui Wa, the Chairman of ICTA; and the Lord Mayor, Mr. Yusuf Nujuraully.
The ceremony was presided over by the Secretary of MIM, Mr. Bashir Oozeer, while Mr. A.F. Khodabaccus, the PRO, presented a brief history of the Mauritius Islamic Mission from its inception in the 1960s up to now. The President of MIM, Mr. Acmez Tokee, who was to arrive a bit late, had requested our PRO to do so.
Mr. Khodabaccus, who was the first to take the floor, remarked at the outset that though MIM was officially registered in 1962, its benevolent activities started as early as after the passage of Cyclone Carole in 1960. Most of its founders, he said, are no longer with us, but the one who needs to be specially mentioned is Sheik Mustapha Beeharry, also called Imam Beeharry, who spared no effort in making our organization what it has been and what it is today: an ardent advocate of the rights and welfare of the poor and destitute. This advocacy is not only theoretical (through education) but also practical (through benevolent services offered).
As for the MIM Day Care Centre for people with Disabilities, to which the tablet is particularly destined, and which, as pointed out by the PRO, was established by none other than Imam Beeharry’s son, Zahir, himself a person suffering from a disability. Though he is not one of the founders of MIM, his contribution to the success of MIM as a benevolent organization cannot be overlooked.
The personalities present, in their interventions, all praised the excellent performance of MIM in the social field, especially in the rehabilitation of people with disabilities. However, it must not be forgotten that running the DCC is not the only activity of MIM. Along with this activity, we do cater to the welfare of the poor by providing financial and material help to them, a list that is not appropriate to mention here.
The Chairman of ICTA, as well as the other personalities present, presented the tablet to the pupils of the DCC, and the latter, in turn, offered a shield to each of the former to thank them for their valuable presence and the kind donation of the tablets.
The ceremony, which started at about 11:00 a.m., ended around 12:00 p.m. After thanking all those who had made the ceremony such a big success, especially Mr. Tariq Hossenally, Communication Executive of ICTA, and Mr. Reaaz Rosun, MIM’s Officer in charge, Mr. Bashir Oozeer invited the audience to have tea and cakes, which they did and were quite thankful for the reception.
